Return of Toxic Tony Blair in Attempt to Prevent Scottish Independence Referendum

There is no shortage of discredited politicians being given publicity at the moment. They are often rolled out by sections of the media to give support to one cause or another. The latest to be given maximum coverage is Tony Blair, despised British ex-Prime Minister. His latest "intervention" is that a future Labour Government should not enter into any negotiation with the Scottish National Party (SNP) in regard to a second Scottish independence referendum. The SNP is the largest political party in Scotland, which holds most Scottish parliamentary seats in the Parliament of the UK.

There appears to be a hope that people have forgotten that there is plenty of evidence that during his time in office Tony Blair deceived the cabinet (the collective decision-making body of  the UK government), parliament and the people, in his enthusiastic pursuit of the war on Iraq. A war that a post-war study estimated to have resulted in the death of about half a million people. This is why many continue to describe him as a war criminal who must answer for his actions.

It is Iraq that dominates Blair's legacy in the mind of many people. However, Blair's period in power also marked the time when Labour enthusiastically embraced the principles of the free market. A period of so called "reform" with "deregulation". He introduced tuition fees for students, he pursued private finance initiatives across public services, and generally set about "freeing up business" by any means necessary. His policies alienated ordinary working people contributing to a disillusionment with politics that, no matter what your view on Brexit, in all likelihood also contributed to a majority in Britain voting to leave the European Union. It was certainly a factor in the collapse of support for the Labour Party in Scotland.

So the reliance on sections of the British media that people will have forgotten the disaster of Toxic Tony Blair's time in office is unlikely to be successful. His combination of aggression overseas, pro-market policies at home and deception in general has made him a pariah. There is an adverse reaction to anything that Tony Blair has to say and his hostility to a second Scottish Independence Referendum will meet with the same response.
