The campaign for selection of a leader for Plaid Cymru – Party of Wales is now underway. The three candidates are all elected members of Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru - National Assembly for Wales. Rhun ap Iorwerth represents Ynys Môn, Adam Price represents Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, and Leanne Wood represents Rhondda.
Under party rules, the opportunity to challenge the party leader opens once every two years. The present leader, Leanne Wood won the leadership in 2012 and was unchallenged in 2014 and 2016. This year both Rhun ap Iorwerth and Adam Price have decided to contest the position. At this time Plaid Cymru holds one of four Welsh seats in the European Parliament, four of 40 Welsh seats in the UK Parliament, 10 of 60 seats in the National Assembly for Wales, and 202 of 1,264 principal local authority councillors.
