LEAGUE BRANCH EXPRESS TERRITORIAL SEA AND SEABED CONCERNS
At this months meeting of the Manx branch of the Celtic League concern was expressed about the total disregard shown by the United Kingdom to Manx territorial integrity under the United Convention on the Law of the Seas.
It was agreed that the branch would ask the Celtic League General Secretary to approach the relevant United Nations bodies responsible for overseeing UNCLOS.
The meeting expressed a view that at a time when the Manx government complained of fiscal limitations every opportunity should be taken to ensure that resources which under International law belong to the Isle of Man are not ‘cherry-picked’ by the United Kingdom .
It was recognised that the issue is complex as while the Secretary General of the United Nations receives instruments of ratification and accession and the UN provides support for meetings of states party to the Convention, the UN has no direct operational role in the implementation of the Convention. There is, however, a role played by organisations such as the International Maritime Organisation the International Seabed Authority and over bodies affiliated to or established under the auspices of the UN.
It was felt that the Celtic League centrally may be able to use its role as an accredited UN NGO to pursue the matter.
