Manx branch resolutions adopted at Glasgow AGM of the Celtic League

Two resolutions were successfully moved by the Manx branch Secretary of the Celtic League at the organisations AGM in Glasgow last weekend.

One related to the long standing support of the League for the Chagos Islanders who were evicted from their homes in the 1960s. The other resolution related to the industrial harvesting of kelp off the West of Scotland which could impact the eco balance of Marine life not just there but in the wider sea area of the West of these Islands.

The text of the resolutions is set out below and branches that have Resolutions adopted are charged with actioning them - this task will fall to Allen Moore (Manx Sec).

“Recalling the resolutions adopted at the 2000 and 2017 Celtic League AGMs that condemned 'the forced removal, between 1966 and 1969 of the population of the Chagos islands of Diego Garcia from their home by the British and American governments, as one of the most shameful examples of colonial exploitation';

Also being aware of the intimidating role that members of the British Army played in that deportation

This AGM calls upon the British Government and British Army:

(a) to reiterate the apology for the action on the Chagos Islands and also identify the personnel involved and the unit(s) to which they belonged.'

(b) give credibility to the apology by allowing the return of the Chagos Islanders to their homes.'

“Mannin Resolution 2:

'This AGM calls on the Scottish Parliament to commission an independent review into plans for dredging kelp around the coasts of Scotland, including their sustainability and effects on non-target species.”
