Labour makes callous decision to scrap Winter Fuel Payments for millions of pensioners

Revealing Labour's true colours Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to remove Winter Fuel Payments for millions of pensioners from this year. Announcing the decision she said: “This is not the statement I wanted to give today, and these are not the decisions I wanted to make. But they are the right decisions in difficult circumstances,”. The decision has been condemned by pensioner groups including the Wales’ Older People’s Commissioner Heléna Herklots who stated: “I would urge the Chancellor to reconsider this decision ahead of her budget to avoid driving more older people in Wales into poverty, and putting people’s health and well-being at risk, which could bring greater costs in the longer-term.”

The drastic cut back will also have repercussion's for Scotland where the amount of cash sent to Holyrood (Scottish Parliament) by the UK Treasury to administer the scheme is set to be drastically scaled back. The Scottish National Party government in Scotland has been urged not to halt the winter fuel payments for pensioners which would push many Scottish pensioners into poverty.
