News From Adrian Cain, Manx Language Development Officer for Culture Vannin:
Bannaghtyn
Given that there is so much going on this Saturday I thought we’d turn it into an impromptu Manx Language Day.
Start the day at 10.30am with an advanced Manx Language Class at the House of Manannan in Peel. Follow this by enrolling for the Manx buddy system with Pobble which is going very well. (See information on Pobble buddy system below).
From 2pm join the Pobble walk with Dave Fisher. Meeting at the Forestry Department car park we will take the old Foxdale mines railway line to Higher Foxdale, returning via the Lhoobs Road, Archallagan and the Hope.
After this enrol for the new on-line Manx course, Say Something in Manx: https://www.saysomethingin.com/manx
Round off the day with the Ruth Keggin concert at the Centenary Centre in Peel:https://www.ruthkeggin.com/
And relax!
Please feel free to tell me how many Manx events you’ll be taking part in on Saturday: un red, daa red…ram reddyn, foddee!
Adrian

SHESHAGHYN Y ÇHENGEY- LANGUAGE BUDDIES
Sheshaghyn y Çhengey are paired speakers who wish to improve their spoken Gaelg in one-to- one conversation over an agreed period. The system pairs a learner with a more advanced speaker who will assist the learner to become more fluent. You do not have to be a very fluent speaker to assist someone with less experience than you.
The pairs consist of a ‘mainshtyr’ (‘master’ or more experienced ‘teacher’) and a ‘prindeys’ (‘apprentice’ or less experienced learner). It is envisaged that both mainshtyr and prindeys will gain from the experience, with the mainshtyr tending to learn from teaching and the prindeys from receiving specific help, e.g. in forming phrases and using idioms that lead to the development of more fluent and confident speaking. There is no reason why a prindeys cannot also be a mainshtyr and vice versa, as there are people at all levels of learning and skill. Prindeysyn should be of at least the intermediate/improver stage of learning.
Language Buddies must be or become Pobble members on application. A co-ordinator keeps a list of those willing to be mainshtyryn. Those wishing to be prindeysyn contact the co-ordinator at post@pobble.im. The co-ordinator sends a simple form for completion with personal and contact details, language aims and general interests and current level of Gaelg. The form may be completed in either English or Gaelg.
The co-ordinator seeks to match the prindeys with a suitable mainshtyr and contacts the mainshtyr who then makes contact with the prindeys. The sheshaghyn contract to converse for up to an hour per session. Sheshaghyn arrange between themselves the frequency, location and mode of contact e.g. face to face, Skype etc.
A fee of £10 for every five sessions or £20 for ten sessions is payable by the prindeys (paid direct to by Pobble) to cover Pobble expenses and to enable Pobble to arrange additional support and reward events for the mainshtyryn as well as additional learning events.
The maximum contract is for ten sessions. Should the pair wish to continue beyond the tenth session, they can arrange another ten sessions and let the co-ordinator know. Should the prindeys wish to try conversing with a new partner, they can contact the co-ordinator who will try to arrange this.
