Ireland: Protest over conifer plantation policy

There is a big demo planned tomorrow at the Dail in Dublin against afforestation - report here from Green News ie:

Its being spearheaded by a group from Co Leitrim one of the counties in Ireland worst affected by the introduction of non indigenous conifer plantations.

Leitrim is a beautiful place. I’ve spent several long blissful holidays there over the years and from Kinlough in the north to Mohill in the south it lives up to its title ‘Lovely Leitrim’.

The Irish government see afforestation as a commercial opportunity but as the video with this report shows its an opportunity for ‘Vulture Funds’ and absentee investors to exploit whilst local communities have to endure the downside of pollution and damage to environment and habitat.

It's great that communities are organizing to fight commercial exploitation of this kind that puts profits before environment and people.
