Increased threat to marine environment as disaster unfolds on our seas

News from the Celtic League:

An item from the Celtic League points to the devastating threat posed to the marine environment by overfishing and the vandalism being committed by the actions of supertrawlers. Drawing on an article by 'Animals Australia' it shows the catastrophy that is unfolding on our seas. A threat in the Eastern Atlantic that is increased by a large Chinese fleet which is causing untold damage. There has to be international action to stop this massive threat to the marine environment. See the Celtic League article below and link to the feature from 'Animals Australia'. The description 'Super Scary' is not overstating the issue:

"A ‘SUPER SCARY’ THREAT TO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Good feature article here from ‘Animals Australia for a kinder world’. We have for several years now been highlighting the danger to the marine environment posed by the ‘Super Trawler’ and this articles in five steps encapsulates succinctly all that it bad about them.

The ‘Super Trawler’ issue is an emotive issue in the Southern hemisphere however the ‘Animals Australia’ article also highlights the ecological disaster caused by industrial fishing off West Africa and in the Eastern Atlantic.

Celtic League have pressed domestic governments such as the UK and Ireland plus the EU on the issue. We have also highlighted concerns to both the International Maritime Organisation and the International Labour Organisation. However still the destruction goes on with the added dimension now of a large and active Chinese fleet in Eastern Atlantic waters.
