Demand for increase in Welsh language medium education in Pembrokeshire grows

Recent consultations which have taken place throughout the county of Pembrokeshire (Welsh: Sir Benfro) in the south west of Wales have shown increasing demand for education to be provided in the Welsh language. At the present time of the 61 primary schools and eight secondary schools in Pembrokeshire, 41% provide some form of Welsh medium provision. The preliminary consultation found that 73% of people in Pembrokeshire thought there was a general need to increase provision in order to make the Welsh language accessible to all children.

The County council have agreed to act on this demand. Cllr Huw George has described the consultations as "absolutely fantastic". While Cllr Sue Perkins said: “The demand for Welsh medium education in Pembrokeshire has grown significantly in recent years.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the council to include the desires and requests of Pembrokeshire residents in the development of education provision across the county, to include improved Welsh medium provision.”
