I had one of my weekly sojourns into ‘the northlands’ today to stock up at the farm shop most relaxing. I love their produce which is tasty - par excellence! Carrots you would die for plus eggs that for once don’t defy the title ‘large’ unlike some you see on supermarket shelves.
It's a ‘help yourself and pay up in the honesty box’ operation. The only concession to the modern age is a CCTV camera I suppose that's inevitable. It does though make you hark back to an earlier time in Mann when there was more openness and trust.
Stocked up with curly kale, parsnips etc I depart and suddenly feel guilty. I decide I will have to abandon my boycott of Isle of Man Creameries products. I introduced the ban when I found the Creamery were stumping up cheese to feed those buggers at the Chamber during one of their troughing sessions.
However in hindsight its irrational because ultimately its the farmer who suffers if you boycott Manx and I believe we should support Manx agriculture and food production. Not I suppose that my LONE boycott had much impact - still I was always a principled ‘fella’!
So as of tomorrow the Yeovalley milk and the wide array of cheeses I’ve sampled such as Pilgrims, Cathedral and Coop and Tesco own brand etc are a thing of the past. I’m back to the Creamery though I must say I’ll miss the Kerrygold spreadable butter.
What I did notice during my dalliance with imported dairy products was that some of it was good stuff and more importantly good value. There’s a lesson there for the Creamery maybe they should concentrate on the day job rather that sucking up to those spongers at the Chamber!
