Críona Ní Dhálaigh First Sinn Féin Mayor of Dublin City

Críona Ní Dhálaigh has been elected as the first Sinn Féin mayor of Dublin City .

Sinn Féin became the biggest party on the city council after last year's local elections. As reported in the Irish Times Críona Ni Dhálaigh said that one of her aims in the coming year is to promote the use of the Irish language in daily life in Dublin and to make it more visible and prominent. In doing so she said she supported Conradh na Gaeilge’s proposal “to create a dynamic and innovative Irish-language centre”. This will provide services for Irish speakers, those with interest in the language as well visitors to Dublin at their headquarters on Harcourt Street .

Críona Ní Dhálaigh also confirmed her commitment to fighting for more social housing provision in Dublin . Her election to the position of Mayor (Ard-Mhéara) is seen as important for Sinn Féin ahead of the 1916 Easter Rising centenary celebrations.
