Councillors in Irish city of Derry vote to light up buildings in colours of Palestinian flag

Councillors in the Irish city of Derry (Irish: Doire) have voted to light up local government buildings in the colours of the Palestinian flag. The motion was passed at a special meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council on Monday. It follows events last week when more than 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, which met with widescale condemnation in Ireland. Supporters of the motion said that the vote will send a message of solidarity to the people of Palestine.

The Council also voted to explore the cost of a leaflet drop that would notify every home and business of Israeli products listed by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. BDS campaigns for a total boycott of Israel over its policies towards the Palestinians.
