BREIZH: A MOMENT OF SYMBOLIC TIT FOR TAT

Some stolen signs of the city of Tulle reappear in Brittany

People from Brittany , Alsace , Savoy , the Basque Country met in Tulle in the centre of France in order to remove entrance to town signs and send them to their respective countries. Signs were displayed in Brittany on 30 June, 2015 in quiet gatherings.

This year, there was, in addition, a small symbolic action when protestors waved signs at the town of Tulle, the city of President Hollande .

"Because the President prohibits visibility to our regions, in our turn, we repay her invisible City. All Tulle panels were stolen in mid-June by an international group composed of Alsatian autonomists, of Savoyard activists, Basque abertzaleand Breton red caps", said Alan Coraud, a spokesman for supporters of the reunification of Brittany in five departments.

François Hollande used to be the President of the Council of Corrèze at Tulle. His choices made on the ”back of a packet of fags”, just a year ago, did not allow for the reunification of Brittany, the creation of a region of Savoy (which used to be an independent state), the maintenance of Alsace as a region on its own nor the creation of a Basque département.

"This is a symbolic action," said Alan Coraud.

Every year, these campaigners submit a letter to the nineteen prefects and sub-prefects of the departments concerned, explaining their claim.

There has been more gatherings on Tuesday 30 June 2015 in large Breton cities (Préfectures and Sous-Préfectures) to remind people of the decree of Marshall Pétain, the fascist French Head of State during the dark years of WWII. The decree in question, which divided Brittany , was signed on 30 June 1941 and it is the only decision of those times still in application these days.

Meanwhile, more and more “Breizh 5/5” signs are likely to be seen in the future in the five départements that constitute Brittany . The slogan and the creative drawing* appearing on those signs is the idea of people from Bro-Dreger/Trégor in northern Brittany . They came to the conclusion that many municipalities had signed a vow in favour of the reunification of Brittany but people knew nothing about it. Five events took place in the five first municipalities to install the creative fun signs, one in each Breton département : Guipavas (Finistère), Langouet (Ille-et-Vilaine), Blain (Loire-Atlantique), La Chapelle-Caro (Morbihan), et Trévou-Tréguignec (Cׅôtes-d’Armor) at the end of June. There is the promise of more soon.
