Menhir Champ-Dolent

Menhir Champ Dolent

This is the largest Menhir in Brittany standing at almost ten metres in height. The granite Neolithic monument is located in Dol-de-Bretagne which is along the D795 north from Combourg and is 2 kilometres (1 mile) south of Dol-de-Bretagne. Its height above ground is between 9.3 and 9.5 metres (about 31 feet) and it has an estimated weight of around 100 tonnes. Mehirs such as this in Brittany are thought to date to c. 5000–4000 BC. There are a number of legends attached to the Menhir Champ-Dolent. One being that it will predict the end of the world and that the stone is slowly sinking into the ground, and the world will end when it disappears altogether. Another legend is that the menhir fell from the skies to separate two feuding brothers who were on the point of killing each other.
