Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth

It is 75 years since the first Welsh-medium school was established. Under the name of Urdd Gobaith Cymru but now called Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth it was founded in 1939 by Syr Ifan ab Owen Edwards under the guidance of Norah Isaac. From those early days education through the medium of the Welsh language has flourished throughout Wales. When Ysgol Gymraeg yr Urdd was opened in 1939 it only had six pupils, but today there are more than 400.

An event will be held for supporters as well as past and present pupils of the school on Thursday. As reported in the Welsh newspaper the Daily Post: 'Syr Ifan’s son, Prys, will present a portrait of his father, painted by Alfred Janes in the 1950s, as a gift to the school, and a commemorative book of recollections and pictures of staff and pupils will be launched.' he went on to say  “I present this portrait of my father in the hope his work will inspire young people to work together to conserve our language, and so that teachers and supporters of the language continue with their invaluable work developing the Urdd within our schools and communities.”
