Northern Ireland Executive Fails to Support the Irish Tongue - Violates European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages

The website "InsideIreland" reports in an article by Caira Hanna, that the Northern Ireland Executive has come under criticism for it's "..failure to submit details on the promotion and progress of the Irish Language to the British Government for inclusion in a European report."  This information is required to comply with the reporting requirements under the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages.

The article goes on, "The UK government expressed its concern at the (Northern Ireland Executive) inability to agree  a contribution of how it is promoting the Irish..language under the terms of the Council of Europe Charter."

Patsy McGlone, member of Northern Ireland's Legislative Assembly representing the Mid Ulster constituency,  was reported to have expressed his alarm at the Northern Ireland government's violation of the reporting requirements under the European Charter; " Their silence on this issue is damaging the progress of the Irish language in the North and it's symbolic value to the rest of Europe."
