Culture Minister urged to Review Management of Cornish Heritage

NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

The Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League has again written to the The Right Honourable Sajid Javeed MP Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport seeking a meeting with members of his Department following on from a very successful meeting with senior representatives of English Heritage last year.

The branch is seeking a ‘review’ of the role of English Heritage in managing Cornish Heritage.

The full text of the letter is set out below:

The Right Honourable Sajid Javeed MP
Department for Culture Media and Sport
100 Parliament Street
London, SW1A 2BQ

1 December, 2014 & reminder 2nd February, 2015

Dear Secretary of State

Cornish History and Heritage Management

I write following a very successful meeting with senior representatives of English Heritage during which matters concerning Cornwall’s pre English and pre England history and heritage management was discussed. Present at the meeting were representatives of our own NGO as well as our partners in Gorseth Kernow and the campaign groups ‘Save Penwith Moors’ and the ‘Cornish Ancient Sites Protection Network’.

Following the announcement by Rt Hon Danny Alexander MP made on 24th April, 2014 that the Cornish people were to be included as a National Minority into the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, we feel that the ongoing management of Cornish heritage by English Heritage is inappropriate and deserving of review.

Between our organisations, we represent many thousands of people drawn from a spread of communities and ethnicities in Cornwall and we ask to meet with you or your representatives to discuss the matter further.

Yours sincerely

Cllr. Michael J Chappell
Convener
Cornwall Branch Celtic League
